Portugal hosted Dr. Helmut Raiser for an exclusive two-day seminar in Barcelos
Portugal hosted Dr. Helmut Raiser for the first time on May 16th and 17th, 2026, for an exclusive two-day seminar in Barcelos.
Throughout the weekend, 60 participants engaged in both theoretical and practical sessions with one of the most respected legends in IGP. Expectations were incredibly high, and Dr. Raiser did not disappoint. Everyone was eager to personally meet the man who revolutionized Schutzhund protection training by identifying canine drives across the different phases of training.
From his famous color theory to concepts of drive, technique, coordination, and conflict, the seminar thoroughly explored the hands-on application of classical and operant conditioning within the IGP context. While IGP practice in Portugal began in 1991—followed by the country’s first IPO trial in 1995—the sport is still in its infancy compared to Dr. Raiser’s decades of expertise. Consequently, all attendees considered this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from a true master.
Dr. Raiser played a pivotal role in reshaping protection dog training, turning it into a structured, science-based discipline focused on behavioral control. His approach, centered on drive dynamics and emotional regulation, remains a cornerstone of modern training to this day, deeply influencing contemporary practices and cementing his status as an undeniable reference in the field.
It was a true honor to host Dr. Raiser, and the only regret was that it took so long to bring this legend to our country. On a positive note, Dr. Raiser shared that he observed great talent among the local handlers and dogs, concluding that the future of IGP in Portugal looks incredibly promising.
